We have introduced Nutrition Care Services at our clinics, as clinical research has clearly shown that the adoption and maintenance of healthy dietary and lifestyle behaviors can effectively prolong life and delay the onset of chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. A Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist is now available at our locations to provide consultations to patients who will benefit significantly from this service.

In addition to general services we offer 3 structured programs designed for specific nutritional needs. For those wanting assistance with other concerns such as gastrointestinal issues, pediatric feeding or sports nutrition we can develop an individualized program.

What is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN)?

A licensed dietitian/nutritionist is a nutrition professional who has met defined academic and professional requirements and is recognized as your most credible source of nutrition information. In addition, RDNs are trained how to use nutrition to prevent and control disease. Our RDNs are also trained in providing comprehensive diabetes education for our patients and hold additional specialty certifications in weight management and diabetes management.

Nutrition and Lifestyle Solutions That Work

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

Research shows that nutrition and lifestyle interventions targeting adults start to generate positive effects immediately after their implementation, and benefits are even faster for interventions that target high-risk individuals and age groups. This means it is never too late to benefit from nutrition or lifestyle changes which can alter the course of a chronic condition and/or delay the onset of complications. 

According to the Centers for Disease Control, a modest 5-10% maintained weight loss and at least 150 minutes per week in physical activity can:

  • Reduce the risk of getting diabetes by 58%
  • Improve A1c and blood sugar control in those with diabetes, reducing the risk of nerve, kidney and eye complications by 40%
  • Lower heart disease risk by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. A 12 to 13 point reduction in systolic blood pressure can reduce heart disease deaths by 25% and a 10% decrease in total cholesterol levels reduces the risk of coronary heart disease by 30%!

However, as the continued popularity of crash and fad diets reveals, it is typically easier to lose weight than to keep off lost weight. These quick-fixes do not work over the long term. So, what does work?

Winning With Weight Loss and Keeping it Off

The National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), analyzes the behavior of people who have successfully lost weight and sustained weight loss over time. Registry participants have lost an average 66 lbs. of weight and kept it off for more than 5.5 years. Many people included in the registry have lost more weight than this, and the range of weight loss for successful participants is between 30 – 300 lbs!

What works:

Researchers from the NWCR have analyzed the behavior of registry participants and report that

  • 55% of people attribute their success to receiving assistance from a professional or weight loss program.
  • 98% report that they modified their diet and 94% report they increased their physical activity.

Having your own professional provider to support your weight loss effort contributes significantly to weight loss success.

What is Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)?

Medical Nutrition Therapy is the translation of evidence based nutrition practice guidelines into a customized program as well as a personalized plan of healthy eating based on an individual’s nutritional needs and medical history. Our licensed dietitian/nutritionist will use MNT and counseling/coaching techniques to help you reach your personal health and wellness goals.

Who Will Benefit Most From MNT?

Research has clearly shown that if you are overweight, or if you have been diagnosed with prediabetes, diabetes, prehypertension, hypertension, heart disease, high cholesterol or other forms of elevated blood lipid levels, then MNT can significantly and positively impact the course of these chronic conditions.

Nutrition therapy is also able to help you manage many other conditions, such as: fatty liver disease, gastrointestinal disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome and osteoarthritis, to name a few other conditions. How Much Will This Cost?

Most insurers will cover nutritional counseling provided by a Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist. Currently, Avance Care provides in-network services to members of Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS), Cigna, Aetna/Coventry, United Health Care, and Medicare. We also offer these services at an affordable rate if you need to pay for the services as an out of pocket expense.
